Statement of Intent

How do you intend to use the four areas of the media theoretical framework to communicate meaning and meet the requirements of your chosen brief?

Product 1

I intend to create a music magazine that targets 16-25-year-olds who crave entertainment. My front cover will feature celebrity gossip and tour cover lines that will be highly effective for this demographic who are heavily influenced by celebrity culture and the desire for escapism. The tour information will hopefully appeal to their active participation in music fandoms and live events both of which are key to their social lives and identity formation (Henry Jenkins). I will use female upcoming artistson both magazines’ main cover image to appeal to the younger audiences, Gen Z, who are drawn todiversity and representation. By highlighting rising female artists it will not only align with the growing demand forgender equalityin the music industry but will offeraspirational role modelsfor the young female readers and  willchallenge traditional gender norms in the music industry, promotingempowerment anddiversity. This will create a sense of identification for the reader with the artist – making the magazine feel more personal. Another important aspect I will include on my magazine is the use of intertextuality. Intertextuality will connect the magazine to cultural references which will reinforce shared meanings among the readers. I will do this by referencing a song that’s been embedded into a cover line in order to satisfy the target audience with their knowledge and understanding of these references. Furthermore, some cover lines will use direct address such as ‘your album reviews’  to create a conversational tone that will draw readers in from competitors. This will make the content feel like the magazine has been tailored for them which adheres to the Uses and Gratifications Theory, where audiences want to feel relevant in the media they consume – therefore this will hopefully encourage audience engagement. In my content's pages, I will offer a variety of articles to read, from music related celebrity news to upcoming artists and BTS content. This variety keeps the magazine dynamic and engaging and will cater towards the audience’s desire for entertainment as well as information. In addition, celeb gossip and BTS content represents celebrities more organically.

Product 2

I intend to create a sophisticated yet entertaining website for my audience. I will do this by incorporating hidden features to create a sense of exclusivity and reward for users who discover them – this will be an effective strategy to enhance audience engagement. This will appeal to the 16-25 year old demographic as they do have a desire for interactive content. By embedding these hidden features it will encourage participation where the audience will not just be passive consumers but active users within the magazine. Visual elements, such as videos, are important for captivating a younger audience that prefers multimedia content rather than just text-heavy content. This demographic who are shaped by platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram, means that their attention span is decreasing so by providing visual content it will offer gratification and cater to shorter attention spans. This multi modal approach aligns with the Uses and Gratifications Theory, as audiences seek out media for entertainment as well as information that a video could provide. Additionally, on my website I will include social media links that reach to a digital community. There will be links to encourage the audience to follow both the Editor-in-Chiefs and the magazines social media platforms; this will create a sense of intimacy due to the direct access to the industry. This will reflect convergence culture where the media content flows across multiple platforms and audiences will become active rather than passive. By following these accounts, the audience will receive updates, BTS content and exclusive insights which will enhance the magazines brand and ethos to make it more real rather than ‘perfect’ in front of the camera. For representation, the social media links will allow users to see the people behind the articles and publication. This will appeal to the 16-25 year old demographic who value authenticity and relatability and will offer them not just content but access to a community so it will be effective incorporating this throughout my magazine. Finally, I am going to have an audience interaction section on my magazine where readers of the magazine can participate on events and get the chance to appear on the website

How do you intend to link your media products to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the digitally convergent nature of your media production?

Digital Convergence is important to create a flow across both the magazine and website to allow audiences to interact with content on multiple platforms. Maintaining a consistent and sophisticated house style and strapline reinforces the brand identity. This synergy reinforces brand recognition yet will ensure the magazine and website appear professional in order to appeal to the audience. I am going to include a fake ‘code’ in Edition 1 that directs readers to the website which encourages cross-platform engagement, this will attract users to go online for more interactive content, such as competition details. Furthermore, this will foster audience loyalty, as they interact with both print and digital media for an interactive and engaging experience.
